The Characters

WARNING: THESE SUMMARIES ARE BASED ON ALL THREE BOOKS.  THEY TELL EACH CHARACTER'S FATE SO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS YET, DO NOT READ THEM. If you don't care if I give away the ending then read on!!!!!
 
 
 
The Fellowship:
Frodo Baggins (hobbit) - he is given the ring by Bilbo, his uncle ~ he volunteers to take the ring to Mount Doom, thus he is the Ringbearer ~ he and Sam leave the fellowship to continue to Mount Doom alone with Gollum as their guide ~ his weapon is Sting, given to him by Bilbo ~ he eventually does get the ring to Mount Doom, though it is Gollum who ends up destroying it ~ he finishes Bilbo's book, the Silmarillion ~ he was poisoned by Shelob and became ill on the anniversary of his poisoning every year until he eventually went to the Grey Havens

Samwise Gamgee (hobbit) - he makes a promise to Gandalf to never leave his master's side, and he keeps it ~ he goes with Frodo, his master, to Mordor ~ he is Frodo's closest friend ~ his weapon is a knife ~ he eventually marries Rose Cotton and has many children and becomes Mayor

Peregrin Took - aka Pippin (hobbit) -son of Paladin ~ he is Frodo's cousin ~ he joins the fellowship but later goes to serve Denethor ~ he is closest to Merry ~ his weapon is a knife ~ he and Merry are mostly responsible for the saving of the Shire

Meriadoc Brandybuck - aka Merry (hobbit) - joins the fellowship but later goes to serve Theoden, King of the Mark ~ he is closest to Pippin ~ his weapon is a knife ~ he and Pippin are mostly responsible for the saving of the Shire

Aragorn aka Strider, Elessar, etc... (man) - son of Arathorn ~ he is Isildur's heir, the heir to Gondor's throne ~ he is in love with an elf named Arwen, Elrond's daughter ~ he is a friend of Gandalf and met up with the hobbits in Bree ~ he is also a Ranger ~ his weapon is a sword ~ he eventually becomes King of Gondor after he brings the army of the dead to fight against the evil invading the city ~ he marries Arwen

Legolas Greenleaf (elf) - prince of Mirkwood ~ he first hates then becomes best friends with Gimli ~ he has very good hearing and sight which he uses to benefit the fellowship ~ his weapon choice is a bow and arrows and elvish knives ~ he also has a very light step and can walk on snow ~ after the war of the ring, he travels by boat with Gimli because of his new found love of the sea

Gimli (dwarf) - Legolas is his best friend and ex-enemy ~ his weapon is an ax ~ he is related to Balin, the Lord of Moria ~ son of Gloin ~ after the war of the ring, he goes on a journey by boat with Legolas

Boromir (man) - son of Denethor ~ his weapon is a sword ~ he lives in Gondor and wishes to save it ~ he is eventually corrupted by the ring yet dies fighting off the Orcs

Gandalf the Grey -later the White (wizard) - he is the leader of the Fellowship and the brains behind their journey ~ he is a guide to Frodo ~ he falls in to Shadow and then becomes Gandalf the White ~ he later also accompanies Frodo to the Grey Havens
Others:
Sauron - the Dark Lord of the rings ~ the ruler over Mordor ~ his life is bound to the ring ~ Isildur cut the ring from his hand ~ his lidless eye watches sees if someone puts on the ring ~ he is destroyed when the ring falls into Mount Doom
 
Saruman the White (wizard) - the head of the wizarding order ~ rules over the goblin/orc race he created to find the ring ~ he turned evil ~ he is later put under house arrest and guarded by the ents in Orthanc ~ he takes over the Shire for a while ~ ironically, he is killed in Bag End by Wormtounge
 
Gollum/Smeagol - he found the ring in the water and kept it for many years, causing him to become corrupted and live unnaturally long ~ he is drawn to the ring ~ he has two sides to himself (Gollum and Smeagol - his real name) and often times has arguments with himself ~ he guides Frodo and Sam to Mordor and also to Shelob's lair ~ he steals the ring at Mount Doom and falls into the fire, destroying the ring and himself
 
Bilbo Baggins (hobbit) - uncle to Frodo ~ he found the ring in Gollum's cave and told Frodo of these adventures ~ he gives Sting and the shirt of mithril to Frodo ~ he writes the Silmarillion which is later finished by Frodo
 
Galadriel (elf) - queen of Lothlorien ~ she has Frodo look into her mirror to see times to come ~ she too is a ringbearer ~ she gives the fellowship their gifts for their journey i.e. the elvish cloaks, Legolas's bow, elvish rope, seeds, the phial of Galadriel, etc... ~ she also goes to the Grey Havens
 
Celeborn (elf) - king of Lothlorien
 
Arwen (elf) - daughter of Elrond ~ princess of Rivendell ~ she marries Aragorn and lives with him in Gondor ~ she wears the elvish stone
 
Elrond (elf) - father of Arwen ~ ruler of Rivendell ~ he held the meeting where the fellowship was formed ~ he fought against Sauron ~ he too goes to the Grey Havens
 
Faramir (man) -son of Denethor ~ brother of Boromir ~ later husband to Eowyn ~ he leads the armies
 
Denethor (man) - father of Boromir and Faramir and the last Steward of Gondor ~ he owns one of the palantirs and it drives him mad ~ he sets fire to his room and dies in the fire 
 
Eomer (man) - brother to Eowyn ~ son of Eomund ~ nephew of Theoden ~ he is a significant soldier in the war
 
Eowyn (woman) - sister to Eomer ~ daughter of Eomund ~ niece of Theoden ~ she falls in love with Aragorn but eventually falls in love with and marries Faramir ~ she dresses as a man to join the fight and stands up to the Nazgul
 
Wormtounge - in Theoden's council ~ worker of Saruman ~ he eventually kills Saruman in Bag End but while running away is shot with arrows by hobbits
 
Theoden (man) - King of the Mark ~ uncle to Eomund and Eowyn
 
Orcs - evil creatures searching for the ring ~ they kill Boromir ~ they capture Merry and Pippin
 
Ringwraiths - evil disembodied creatures of Sauron ~ when on bird-like beasts they are called Nazgul ~ they cannot see during the day only smell but during the night they see shadows ~ they are drawn to the ring
 
Treebeard (ent) - he takes care of Merry and Pippin ~ he takes charge of the ents in Isengard who are guarding Saruman
 
Shelob (spider) - huge spider that lives in a lair and has Gollum bring her food ~ she guards that entrance to Mordor ~ she poisons Frodo which causes him to become ill every year on that date ~ Sam injures her so much that she is forced to go into hiding
